A community hub offering activities for children in Selly Oak.

Selly Oak is now the home of TouchBase Pears , a new facility for the entire community to enjoy and to connect locals to other families. Created by national charity Sense, a national charity supporting people who are deafblind, have compound needs or sensory impairments, in leading independent lives.

TouchBase Pears also offers activities for with children of all abilities and welcomes families to come along and take part in messy play, sensory play, story time and more.

Sense

Sense supports people who are deafblind, and if you are interested in learning sign language, you can visit the centre and take part in British Sign Language finger spelling sessions.

Children’s Activities

There are heaps of children’s activities on offer, including:
  • Messy Play for children aged under 5 and located in the Hive Café (see below for more details about the café.)
  • Child-led play, which is aimed at children aged 5 to 18 months. The centre offers free taster session using treasure baskets.
  • Storytime for children under 5, located in the library.
  • Sensory Play for children under 5, located in the Hub.
  • Drop-in craft sessions for children aged between 3 and 12 years.
  • Bookings are not required – sessions are free but any small donations are welcome to cover materials.

    The Children’s Library

    TouchBase Pears has a children’s library which runs the Storytime sessions and Summer Reading Challenge. They also provide large print and audio books, free use of computers and printing and copying facilities.

    The Hive Café

    The Hive Café is a family-friendly dining experience that provides light meals and snacks including breakfast and hot and cold lunches, along with coffee and other hot beverages. The Hive can also offer half portions – perfect for children! They open from Monday to Saturday and have highchairs and baby change facilities available, plus indoor and outdoor seating. If you are thinking of hiring the centre for an event, the Hive can also arrange catering, including canapés, full meals or a simple tea and biscuit break.

    Along with the above, Touchbase Pears runs regular events, art exhibitions and performances. It is well and truly a facility for the whole of Birmingham to enjoy, so keep an eye on their Facebook page for what’s happening.
