Thinktank Science Museum

An award-winning museum that teaches children about science in a fun, hands-on way.

Thinktank Science Museum is one of Birmingham’s favourite museums – it’s fun, educational and interactive and has a huge range of programmes and activities suited for children and their parents.

This award-winning museum features more than 200 interactive and hands-on displays for visitors and just some of the exhibitions look at various facets of science including medicine, outer space transport, the human body and so much more! If you’re a parent to a toddler, the best news is that children under 3 are free to enter! Here’s what on for families at Thinktank Science Museum.

Family Packs

The Family Packs are a fun way for the entire family to get the most out of your visit to the museum. They are designed for children aged 3 to 7 years, making them an ideal activity for parents and pre-schoolers to enjoy together during the week and on weekends for older kids. Simply borrow one from the ticket desk and have a go at some of the fun activities, all of which are linked to one of the galleries.

Kids City

The Kids City galleries are located on Level 2 of the museum. These five unbelievable galleries have been designed with children aged under 7 years old in mind in mind and take a look at every day science that we might not even know is there. More details about each of the galleries are listed below.

Kids City Gallery
Just some of the highlights include the Jurassic crocodile, the giant tongue and the animation studio. The mini city has a health centre, a street, water play section and a café.

Things About Me Gallery
Do your children ever ask weird questions about how their body works? The ‘Things About Me’ gallery is the perfect place for curious kids who want to learn more about their own anatomy. Some of the exhibits are a bit on the unusual side but fascinating and fun none the less.

Wild Life Gallery
The Wild Life Gallery takes a closer look at the habitats found around the world, from living creatures to those who roamed the earth thousands of years ago. This is another area from which you can borrow a Family Pack from the ticket desk and explore the gallery through a range of activities. The family packs for the Wild Life Gallery are aimed at children aged between 3 and 8 years old.

Medicine Matters Gallery
Learn about how some of Birmingham’s top medical professionals have played a role in the advancement of modern medicine and learn about recent medical breakthroughs.

The Street Gallery
Take a walk down 'The Street’ – a fascinating look at how science and technology are just about everywhere in modern life.

Science Garden

This outdoor space is a fun, hands-on discovery centre for families and is packed with activities and adventure. Some of the themes include engineering, mechanics and transport. Did you know that it is free after 3pm every day?


Along with the Family Packs, parents and children can also have a go at the free family trails. There are three trails to choose from – Iconic Exhibits, Top Ten and Hidden Treasures, all of which are designed to help you and the kids get the most out of your visit to the galleries. You can pick one up from the cloakroom.

School holiday and family activities

Thinktank also runs a range of school holiday and weekend activities for children that includes interactive drop-in sessions, activities for children under 8, object handling for kids who just can’t keep their hands to themselves, and arts and crafts.

Children’s parties

If you’ve got a birthday party on the horizon, why not consider a Thinktank party? These unique birthday parties are £13.50 per child and including admission, lunch and a party bag containing awesome Thinktank items. The parties are suitable for children aged 5 and over.

For a truly unique experience, Thinktank can even accommodate museum sleepovers! The sleepovers are perfect for large group activities such as a school, Scout or Girls’ Brigade group outing. It is a custom-built event that typically involves workshops, time in the galleries, a Planetarium show, science show and a visit to the shop. Sleepovers are available for groups of between 100 and 150 children and are offered on Friday and Saturday nights.

A sleepover costs £35 per head for children and adults. This includes activities and breakfast in the morning. Dinner can be provided for an extra £6.30 per person.

This amazing museum is certain to be a winner for parents and children alike and a wonderful introduction to science for the whole family.
