A wellbeing workshop designed for parents.

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge left the hospital with the new royal baby 7 hours after having a baby. However, for some cultures, it is important for new mothers to stay indoors after giving birth and to practice a certain kind of diet to assist with recovery. Have you heard about Zuo Yuezi (& #22352 ;& #26376 ;& #23376 ;) as a way of postnatal care?

Zuo Yuezi is a traditional Chinese way of postnatal care in which new mothers adopt a series of self-care practices immediately after delivery. It involves a period of ‘self-confinement’ up to 30 days during which time mothers typically stay indoors, minimise most physical movements and consume specific foods and drinks to help her body to recover.

The ideas are rooted in traditional Chinese medicinal principles where the body is in a state of constant flux between ‘yin’ (cold energies) and ‘yang’ (hot energies). New mothers are considered to be in an overall ‘cold’ state and are required to replenish ‘warmer’ energies to restore the balance of the body. Some customs have evolved over the centuries.

Below are some different practices between traditional practices and mainstream suggestions:

Some Chinese mums will still practice Zuo Yuezi even if they have been living outside of China for a long time. The more the mainstream healthcare professionals understand these traditional practices, the more holistic support they can provide to new Chinese mothers.
