Family fun and activities at one of Birmingham's favourite gardens

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens are home to a collection of the city’s most beautiful flowers, plants, Bonsais, birds and butterflies. If you are looking for family activities, the Botanical Gardens are also a great place to take the kids, with lots of things to do, including family events, resources and trails. Here’s what’s on for families at the Birmingham Botanic Gardens.

Children’s Playground

The children’s playground has lots of fun things for the kiddies, including a slide, trampoline, swings, a see-saw and a Tarzan trail. Be sure to take a look at the Totem pole, which is based on North American designs and was carved by master craftsman. There are benches and shelter if you need a rest.

During summer, the Summerhouse is open near the playground and sells a range of ice creams, drinks and biscuits.

Family Explorer Activity Backpacks

Why not hire one of the Botanical Gardens Family Backpacks from the main reception desk? The backpacks are designed to help families gain more from their visit to the Gardens and you can hire them every day. They are filled with fun things and creative activities for families, including an activity sheet (plus an answer sheet for parents or guardians) a clipboard for convenience, ID sheet and, depending on your chosen backpack’s theme, a magnifying glass, binoculars, tape measure, calculator, colouring pencils or bug pot. They are suitable for children of all ages, although younger children may need help from mum or dad. There are four themed backpacks to choose from, which are Amazing Plants, Brilliant Birds, Bugs and Beasties and Tremendous Trees.

Each backpack is just £2 to hire, plus an £8 refundable deposit. They usually take around an hour and a half to complete.

If you and the kids want to gain even more from your visit to the Botanical Gardens, have a go at one of the Children’s trails. Grab the activity sheet from the main reception desk and follow the instructions – simple! These fun and educational trails are suitable for children of all ages and include Brilliant Butterflies, in which you can explore the butterfly house in summer, Dangerous Plants, Fabulous Food, Garden Minibeasts, in which you can learn about some native garden insects, Plant Record Breakers, and Magical Plants, in which you can learn about the real-life plants that inspired the Harry Potter books! Trails are just £1.50 and are available every day during opening hours.
