Birmingham has a number of great writing courses for budding young novelists!

Do you have a child who loves to make up and write stories? Perhaps they would love to take part in a creative writing course or class, just for children! There are courses and groups in Birmingham that are available for ages 7 and over. Read on for more information.

Creative Writing Juniors, Midlands Arts Centre

  • A half-day creative writing course that is suitable for children aged 7 to 11 years.
  • No previous writing experience required and all abilities are welcome.
  • Children will learn various techniques for finding and developing story ideas, building confidence in writing and having fun!
  • All staff are DBS checked.



  • Sparks Young Writers Groups, Writing West Midlands

  • Sparks Groups are located all over the Midlands, although some courses are booked out for this year.
  • Groups are divided roughly into school years 3-6 (junior aged children) and school years 7-12 (secondary school aged children.) 
  • Meetings are held monthly from September to June (10 sessions a year) for 2 hours on a Saturday.
  • They are designed to be fun, friendly and informal, and include a lot of laughs!
  • Each group is small and consists of a maximum of 15 children. Classes are led by a professional writer and an assistant.
  • The type of writing will include fiction, to creative writing, to playwriting, and the focus is on the writing itself, rather than spelling or punctuation.
  • These groups provide an opportunity for your child to develop their creative writing and develop confidence in their abilities, without the pressure of being assessed on their writing. Feedback and suggestions are a part of the group, but not grading.
  • The cost is £60 for the year.

  • They can complete short writing activities, use story starters, or prompts, and even improve their vocabulary.
  • Visitors of the site can generate funny story ideas, gain inspiration and never be stuck for ideas again.
